For three years in the mid-90's, Boyd Johnson used his newly obtained law degree to consult with businesses in Norway on a variety of matters. "It didn't matter what they needed, I would do it," he laughs today. He went to Norway because "I thought I needed some international experience," he explains. Never mind he could not speak Norwegian. Ever resourceful, "I got by somehow."
As General Counsel for companies like ADC, Merrill, and now SPS Commerce, Boyd has used that ability to adapt and analyze to advise on legal matters and business matters alike. "That is the part that gets me going," he says today, "I really like helping in all areas of the business." This ability has earned him numerous awards and recognition, including being named one of the country's best general counsel.
His career did not go according to plan originally. "My major was aviation," he says. "I thought I would be a commercial pilot somewhere by now." He hopes to buy his own plane soon to do Angel Flights and ferry his wife and two children to nearby vacation spots. In his spare free time, he offers to become a friend's instructor pilot. "No one has taken me up on it yet," he laughs.
